Couples break up for many reasons (1). Some relationships don’t work out, and sometimes parting ways is the best option. However, for other couples, therapy can be a helpful tool to strengthen their connection. Along with counseling, it can be helpful to find other ways to reconnect, like dancing together.
Some relationships just need a little ‘re-wiring’ or “re-igniting flames”. In those cases, Ballroom Dancing may be just what they need as a tool to reshape and strengthen the relationship: get out of the draining every-day monotonous tasks and have some fun together, create or broaden the common social circuit, work out together that may have been just an individual activity before, and increase intimacy and renew romance.
Social Benefits
Many social events involve dancing. When a couple does not know how to dance, they may end up spending significant amount of time chatting with other people and they may not even spend any time together. Once they know how to ballroom dance, the moment a Waltz or Tango comes up they will head to the dance floor and immerse in the moment of music, gliding together, and gentle touch. They may even become the star of the event.
Physical Benefits
As time goes by and a couple ages, the physical conditions change. Fitness levels may differ and one or both may put some weight on and they do not have the same look what they feel in love in the first place. Ballroom dancing is a physical activity which over time shapes the body and helps get excess weight off. Most people, in my experience, say that dancing is more fun than going to the gym and running on a trade mill. We may not think but ballroom dance burns calories: slower paced styles will expend between 150 and 220 calories, while quicker types will range between 250 and 320 calories per hour (2).
Mental Benefits
Ballroom dancing is teamwork. There is a leader and a follower role with responsibilities. It works only when both partners do their share of the work. The result is harmony, which will transfer into a couple’s life slowly and they can Waltz or Salsa through life together with ease and understanding each other better.
Emotional Benefits
Relaxing, enjoying music, and touching all stimulate positive changes in the human body. One of the best ways to release stress is through movement. Ballroom dancing allows couples escape the daily routine and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and professional environment. Dancing also improves posture and body tone over time, which will make you look more attractive to your spouse.
Cognitive Benefits
Research shows that Ballroom and Latin dance improves memory, attention, and focus (3). Complete your first lesson and judge for yourself. Setting a goal as a couple may not be new in your life but doing while holding your loved one in your arm definitely will be a novelty.
